Chapter 5

I run through the streets, picking up a familiar scent as I get closer to my destination. Two recognizable scents actually, but one I know better than the other. I soon reach the street for the daycare that Becca’s mother owns.

I still haven’t heard from Fenrir. He should have popped to my location some time ago. I can’t help feeling that I should have checked on Becca myself sooner. I have been a little busy though.

As I approach, I see a side door open and someone steps out into the fenced back yard. I can only see the top of the person’s blond head. I also hear little voices squealing with delight.

“Come here, puppy!” one kid shouts. “Outside.”

“Oh, he’s just so cute. I want to keep him,” a girl says.

I suddenly know exactly what happened to Fenrir.

“I’m sure he has a home,” I hear Becca tell them. “His owner is probably missing him very much.”

I find myself hesitating in my steps. For as much as I wanted to see Becca, I also remembered our last encounter all too well; she’d been possessed by Anubis. After having been touched by an underworld god, would she be the same?

But every Valkyrie seemed tainted to me now. Odin had said that Gelsh, in her Midgard form, could still be in danger of the Valkyries’ wrath; they weren’t very happy to be on the losing side. I wasn’t certain that I wanted to stir up that nest either.

Becca would never become Gelsh again or allowed to return to the Valkyrie. Not since Hjalda had taken Gelsh’s wings as she came down here to warn me of the plot being cooked up against me. Now that Becca belonged fully to Midgard, much like yours truly, it fell to me to protect her.

If the undead jackal had left his taint on her, I probably needed to take care of that as well.

It is high time to face Becca.

I cross over to the fence and step up onto a hastily formed rock of ice so that I can see over. “That’s where you’ve been hiding,” I call out.

Becca gasps as she turns to see me. “Is this your puppy?” she asks.

I can tell that she remembers me, not that it would be easy to forget after what we’d been through, and I am pleased. “Yes, he’s mine.”

She looks like she doesn’t believe me. “What are you doing around here?”

Now I see why she’s so skeptical: she thinks I’m stalking her. Again, good reason, but very wrong. “I was out walking Fenrir and he got away from me.” I shrug, trying to keep it casual.

“Are you standing on a ladder?” She approaches the fence as if she’s going to look over it.

“No, no ladder here.” I really don’t want her to see the ice either.

“Then what are you standing on,” she presses.

“Nothing.”

Snake venom pours into my mouth. I bend over, hiding myself behind the fence and spit it out as quietly as I can. It’s not often that I get the opportunity to not have to choke it down.
